An inflammation in the body is more than just an uncomfortable ordeal. It is often symptomatic of a much graver biological problem. According to 2004 edition of Time Magazine, inflammations link to more serious ailments. These can include cancer, diabetes, asthma, allergies, arthritis, fibromyalgia, lung problems, Alzheimer’s disease and heart attack.
TriVita and Sonoran Blooms recently came up with a Wellness Drink touted to soothe cases of pain and inflammation. The entire campaign is anchored firmly on the health benefits that can be derived from the Nopalea juice. They maintain that by drinking the juice daily, people can see significant physical improvements and lower bodily pain.
A closer look at the product would show that there is some basis to the companies’ wellness claim for the drink. Nopalea is derived from the Nopal cactus that thrives in the Sonoran Desert. It is also known as Opuntia cochenillifera, or the “prickly pear”. Some cultivars may be found in warm places like Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, Maui, Malta, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The fruit itself is edible, but only in its ripened form. The spiky skin has to be properly removed to expose the ingestible meat of the fruit.
A study done by R. A. Chavez-Santoscoy, J.A. Gutierrez-Uribe and S.O. Serna-Salvidar published on the 2009 Springer Science Journal states that certain cultivars of prickly pears contains antioxidant capacities that have the potential for mitigating the spread of cancer cells. There were also particularly promising findings about the fruit’s phenolic compounds with respect to cases of prostate and colon cancer.
In terms of flavor, the drink does have a tasty, tangy flavor that would mostly appeal to people who enjoy fruit juices. For those who are not big fans of fruity flavors, it may take a bit of getting used to, but the palate adapts to it over time. Between chugging low-calorie and zero-vitamin soda drinks and the Nopalea wellness drink, the latter offers more nutritional value without the medicinal aftertaste.
Do however consult a doctor before taking any medical advice.
